Rest In Peace Speedy :-(
Sad news, tonight my little speed demon pet mouse named Speedy passed away. I went to check on the mice after playing video games, and found that only one dashed off this time, as normally they both run and hide, the timid little things that they are. I opened the cage door and went to pick up Speedy, and found that he was dead They were both fine an hour before and Speedy was running around and climbing in the tubes along the cage, so I was shocked to find him dead.
I named him Speedy, since he was twice as fast as my other spiny mice, always running in his wheel at lightning speed. I bought him about two and a half years ago at a pet shop in downtown Toronto called The Menagerie. He was in a cage by himself in a noisy bird room with parrots and parakeets. I had to get him outta there, as that must have been hell on his ears! He had already had bitemarks in his ears, I was told, which was due to his three sisters constantly nipping him at the pet store before they were sold.
At first I bought a new cage, since they told me that he was a girl, so I couldn't house him with my other mice, but Speedy was actually a boy, and it turns out that I didn't need the other cage. I housed him with my other mouse Max Jr., whom he lived together with for a couple of years, and then when Max Jr. passed away, I housed him with Moxy, who is now my only surviving pet mouse. So now I have one pet mouse named Moxy and one pet rat named Alexander left. I don't think that I'm going to adopt anymore for some time, since I've had 15 pet rats, 5 pet spiny mice and 1 fancy mouse in the last five years, with all but 6 adopted from animal shelters.
I shall now miss hearing the sound of the wheel going in the middle of the night as Speedy would run in it
RIP Speedy from May 2007-Nov2009 I don't know his full age but he was probably close to four years old, which is usually the max age for Spiny mice.
